Vizag, 4th Feb 2007: P. Raghunath of Indian railways won the Men 12k National Cross Country title beating armymens at the 41st National Cross Country Championship held at Vizag steel plant. Pampa Chanda retained her women 8k title with an excellent run.
Indian railways pre event training camp in Hyderabad has brought good results in the championship.
More than 650 athletes from 20 state took part in the championship which is also held for junior age group in order to promote cross country running among juniors.

DOHA, Dec. 12: The women’s relay team anchored India to their seventh gold medal, finishing first in the 4x400m event, while the men took the silver in the same event in the Asian Games here today.
There were bronze medals won by Sinimole Paulose in the woman’s 1,500m event and army sailor Rajesh Choudhary on the 12th day of the quadrennial sporting extravaganza.
The women’s squad of Sati Geetha, Pinki Pramanik, K Chitra and Manjeet Kaur brought India’s first gold in track and field events in 3:32.95 seconds, ahead of the quartets from Kazakhstan (3:33.86) and China (3:33.92).
The gold took India’s tally of gold to seven and helped the country climb to ninth in the medals rostrum. India’s tally stood at 7 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze.
Joseph Abraham, Binu Mathew, Bhupinder Singh and T Aboo Backer fetched the silver in the men’s 4x400m relay by clocking 3:06.65sec. Saudi Arabia claimed the gold in 3:05.31 while Sri Lanka stood third in 3:06.97.
India’s Ranjeeth Maheswary finished fourth in the men’s triple jump final.
Earlier, 23-year-old Sinimole took the third spot behind gold medal winner Maryam Jamal Yusuf of Bahrain and silver medallist Yuriko Kobayashi of Japan in 4 minutes, 15.09 seconds.
 
Doha: India ’s best bet Anju Bobby George for the gold medal in the long jump event could not defend her title when
she finished a poor second. Her effort of 6.52 metres came only in her sixth and last jump after she was pushed to the third position at the end of the fifth attempt. She started with a jump of 6.36 metres and could improve up to 6.47 metres in the fifth.

Kazakhstan’s Olga Rypakova, who beat Soma Biswas for the heptathlon gold medal on Saturday, finished third with 6.49 metres. India’s J. J Sobha ended in the eighth position with 6.13 metres as her best.

In women's 400m Manjit Kaur bagged the silver with a season best timing of 52.17 seconds, Pinki missed a chance to grab at least the bronze when she slowed down in the last 20 metres to be pipped at the post by Asami Tanno of Japan. Olga Tereskova of Kazakhstan was the redoubtable winner as she finished the race in 51.86 seconds. Pinki clocked 53.06 seconds.

Chitra K Suman failed to qualify for the 200 metres final, Vikas Gowda finished sixth in the men’s discus with a throw of 58.28 metres. Hamza Chatholi came seventh in 1,500 metres despite her personal best time of 3.43.69 minutes.

NEW DELHI, Oct 16,2006: : Francis Kibiwott won the New Delhi Half Marathon on Sunday and Lineth Chepkirui claimed the women's title to head a dominant Kenyan field.
            Kibiwott clocked in at 1 hour, 1 minute, 1.36 seconds, edging past Cuthbert Nyasngo of Zimbabwe at 1:02:30 and John Korir, also of Kenya, at 1:03:16.
              In the women's category, Chepkirui finished in 1:10:40, ahead of Erkesso Teriba of Ethiopia at 1:11:20. Dire Tune of Kenya finished third in 1:11:53. More than 27,000 people participated in the half marathon, the richest in the world, with prize money totaling $ 150,000.
             Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, IAAF Council Member and President of Asian Athletics Association flagged off the races while Mrs. Sheila Dixit, Chief Minister of Delhi, gave away the prizes to the winners.

New Delhi, October 8, 2006: Indian Railways picked up the men and women championship trophies at stake on the final day of the 46th National Open Athletics Championship at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium by beating strong Services team in men section while left no chance for women Police team to come even closer in the women section.

Bibu Mathew of Services won the title of the Best Male athlete by scoring 1114 points with a win in triple jump (16.29m) while Tamilnadu athlete S. Shanthi bagged the best female athlete title for her superb performance in the women’s 800m final which timed 2:02.21sec.
              Joseph Abraham won his second gold with a win in 400m hurdles in 51.48sec. In the absence of Anju George, J.J. Shobha won the women long jump title with a jump of 6.32m beating teammate G. G. Pramila who managed 6.19m.

Deepmala Devi of Indian Railways set another National Record in the walking event when she won the women's 20000m walking final with a timing of 1:39:30.5hr. thus became the first Indian women to walk 20km distance on road as well as on track in sub 1hour 40 min barrier. Deepamala had started this season with a record in the women's 20 km walk in the National Endurance Competition in New Delhi on January 31, 2006. 
         Amindeep Kaur of Punjab came second with 1:48:52.3 while Maharashtra's Supriya Adhak scored bronze in 1:52:04.7hr.
         In the evening session Women Pole vault was once again center of attraction where V. S. Sureka
continued with her record breaking wins when she raised the championship record to 3.85m but failed to clear 3.95m. Citing illness for last 15 days Sureka promised to perform best in chennai during interstate.
Satyender Kumar ,winner of men's shot putNew Delhi, October 5,2006: O. P. Jaisha of Indian Railways set the new championship record in the women's 1500m run with a timing of 4:11.83sec. on the second day of the National Open Athletics Championship. She beat favorite Sinimol Paulose 
( 4:12.24sec) , Asian Indoor Champion  and Asian Championship silver Medalist S. Shanthi (4:22.93sec)  representing Tamilnadu.
       In the first final of the day, Satyendra Kumar of Indian Railways continued his brilliant series in Men's Shot Put with a winning throw of 18.53m beating veteran Jaiveer Singh who finished on second with a distance of 17.93m. Saurabh Vij, Asian Junior Medalist of Delhi took third place with 17.55m.
New Delhi, October 4, 2006:46th National Open Athletics Championship got off with a big note when Preeja Sreedharan, 24 year old, Indian Railways employee improved on her own National Record in the Women's 10000m run with a timing of 34: 11.45sec beating teammate Preeti L. Rao (second with 36:21.65s) and Madhuri Gurnule of LIC (third with 38:08.95sec.). Preeja had clocked 34:27.13sec at the South Asian Federation at Colombo last month. "My coach feel that I am confident of dipping below 34 minutes but due to today's humid condition I failed short of it but I will break it in the Interstate at Chennai next month" said jubilant Preeja after the race. 

Earlier in the men's 10000m final, Surender Singh of Services won the race with a season leading timing of 29: 30.48sec. Soji Mathew of Indian Railways won the second place with a personal best timing of 29:35.48sec Another Railway man Santosh Kumar Patel took third place with 29:39.71sec. Surender planned to clock below 29minutes and Kashinath Aswale provided him necessary pace of 70 sec. per round till 6km but after that his pace started declining without any pacemaker resulting into another wait for sub 29 timing in 10000m

AFI-Salwan International Throws Competition 2006

New Delhi, September 27, 2006: Athletics Federation of India will be hosting first AFI – Salwan Throwing International Competition at Salwan Throws Academy, Rajinder Nagar on 29th and 30th September 2006. It is likely that athletes from 12 countries will take part in two days competition. A list of the prominent foreign athletes is enclosed. Strong team from China, Poland, Hungary, Iran will be seen in action. 
               Tomasz Majewski Shot Put from Poland who won gold medal in the World University Games in 2005 and European Indoor Gold Medallist will have a strong competition from Zhang Qi from China, who has a personal best of 20.15m and Asian Championship silver medallist Navpreet Singh from India. 
                Men discus will have tough competition among Andnrezej Krawczyk World University Games Silver Medallist from Poland, Abbas Sami from Iran, Asian Games Silver Medallist, Wutao World Junior and Asian Games Gold Medalist will compete for the honour In Javelin Men Indian athletes Jagdish Bishnoi and Anil Kumar will get tough competition from Chinese Rongziang, Asian Games Gold Medallist. Women Discus Thrower Seema Antil and Krishna Punia will get tough competition from China and Croatia. Chinese Hammer Throw World Cup Gold Medalist Gu Yuan will get competition from Hungarian KATALIN DIVOS Silver Medalist of Doha Super Grand Prix 2006 and Polish University Games Bronze Medalist.
There will be total over 200 athletes including 50 athletes from abroad. Junior athletes will also be seen in the age group competition. This event will be broadcast live on DD Sports on both days.

Athens, September 17, 2006: Indian women relay team failed to repeat the brilliant performance in the 10th IAAF World Cup in Athletics when they finished on the 9th position representing Asian team in the 4X400M relay team clocking 3:38.85s. Japanese runner Asami Tanno started the race and then Chitra Soman took over in the second exchange and handed baton to Satti Geetha on the 8th place but Geetha faded away in the final exchange and Manjit Kaur could not recover the position and finished on the 9th place. Americas team won the race with world leading mark of 3:19.84s while USA team finished on the second place with 3:20.69s. Russian team finished third with 3:21.21.
Athens , Sept 16,2006: India's Navpreet Singh finished on the 7th place in the men's shot put event of the 10th IAAF World Cup in Athletics which commenced today at the Athens Olympic Stadium.
Navpreet heaved the shotput to the distance of 18.43m in his first attempt followed by 18.23m, 18.21m and 18.05m in the remaining attempts. Ralf Bartels of Europe won the title with 20.67m edging out favourite Reese Hoffa of USA who could manage only 20.60m. Sofin Pavel of Russia took third place with 20.45m
In the women's 800m, India's hope Pinki Pramanik could not capture the opportunity of the slow race when she remained struck in the group till 700m mark. Zulia Calatayud of Cuba won the race in 2:00.06s beating season leader Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya by just 0.03s. Janeth clocked 2:00.09 to win silver medal while Russian Olga Kotlyarova took third place with 2:00.84s.
Pinki finished on the seventh position with 2:03.28s.
Athens, 15 September 2006: 2.9Million dollar prized 10th IAAF World Cup in Athletics will commence in Athens Olympic Stadium from tomorrow. India will be represented by Pinki Pramanik ( 800m), Navpreet Singh( Shot Put), Manjeet Kaur, Satti Geetha and Chitra Soman ( 4x400m relay).
Its very special place for Manjeet Kaur, Chitra Soman and Satti Geetha who arrived here today after two day long journey from Kiev ( Ukraine). In 2004 at the same venue these runners had performed the best ever performance by an Indian relay team in the Olympics where they finished on 7 th place in the women 4x400m relay final.
"I am so thrilled to come back here and all of us are looking forward to have great run on Sunday evening", said Manjeet Kaur . "Although we are aiming for Doha Asian Games in December and we have been working hard, Athens will provide us an opportunity to test our training results", further Kaur added.
Navpreet Singh, Asian rank no. 1 in Shot put with 19.84m is confident of better show tomorrow evening. Navpreet has always done better outside India. "It feels so great to be on World stage, I am sure going to make most of this opportunity", said Navpreet while doing training on the warm up arena. Five throwers out of eight have season best over 20m thus Navpreet will have to add more effort to come close to them in the four attempts available.
Reese Hoffa of USA is going strong this season with 22.11m throw while Ralf Bartels of Germany is following him closely with 21.43m.
In the women 800m, Pinki Pramanik will try to update her timing which is shuttling between 2:03min and 2:05min in this season. She had won 7 races so far including hatrick at Asian GP circuit. Pinki said "I always like to fight in this two lap race which has all the elements of drama and hence there it will help me to understand tactics involved at this level".
Zulia Calatyud of Cuba is leading the season with 1:56.09 followed by Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya (1:56.66) and Olga Kotlyarova has the power and speed to grab that elusive title.
Macau, July 15,2006: India’s Golden hope dashed when Asian Junior Leader and favorite Saurbh Vij was outclassed by Chinese Wang Like in the Shot Put final. 
         Like, struggling in the initial throws found required rhythm later which helped him to convert his raw power to heave the 6kg put to 20.17m thus added another Gold for China. 
            On the other hand Saurabh  started well in the qualifying throws with a throw of 19.62m but failed to add any further distance in the final throws. He settled on the silver medal. 
Wang was anxious before Saurabh’s sixth attempt and even went close to the ring to check his distance as he was expecting huge throw from Saurabh. Big boy Mohammad Mashari of Kuwait too gave tough fight but finished on the third place with19.60m

6th Indian Oil Federation Cup National Junior Athletics Championship at Chennai from June 15-17, 2006

Chennai, 17 June 2006: Kerala emerge Champions in Junior Federation Cup Athletics; Saurabh sets national mark in Shot Put.
Saurabh Vij of Delhi created the New National record in the Boys under 20 years Shot Put  (6kg.) event with a throw of 20.35m erasing Ranvijay Singh’s 4 year old record of 20.16m set in Mumbai. Saurabh now looking forward to Asian Juniors next month where he is confident to earn Gold medal for India. 
          Jhuma Khatun of West Bengal continued her record breaking run on the second in row when she smashed 800m girls meet record with a timing of 2:10.24s while Sajeesh Jospeh of Kerala made his presence felt with a meet record in 800m boys clocking 1:50.22s.
          Vinod Raj Paul of host Tamilnadu created the new meet record in the boys triple jump event with a jump of 15.90m while his teammate Pavan Kumar took silver with 14.76m. Bronze went to Anoop Thomas of Kerala with 14.63m.
        Kerala emerged Overall champion with a total point tally of 197.5 while Uttra Pradesh bagged runnerup championship. Host Tamilnadu finished on third place with 106 points.
Girls 5000m run final in progress at Jr. Fed Cup AthleticsChennai, 15 June 2006: N. Vadivelu of host Tamilnadu created the lone meet record on the inaugural day of the 6th Indian Oil Federation Cup National Junior Athletics Championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.  

Total of seven finals were held on the first day where athletes from north India dominated the medal places while Kerala girls took all three place in girls long jump final.

N. Vadivelu cleared the height of 4.61m, just 0.01m more than previous meet record of 4.60m set in 2001 by Praveen Kumar of Haryana at Bangalore.

P. K Priya of Kerala beat teammate and favourite M. A. Prajusha in the girls long jump with an impressive jump of 6.12m. Prajusha could managed only 5.93m.  

Boys Hammer throw gold went to Diwakar Singh of Uttar Pradesh with a massive throw of 64.24m. Pushpinder Singh of Punjab claimed silver with 56.35m. It has been tradition for Uttrar Pradesh to dominate in the Hammer Throw and this is due to encouragement by the local to this power show event. Athletes are seen doing Hammer Throwing in their farms with a small circle on the corner of farm.

Priyanka Bhanot of Delhi not only scored distinction in her 12th exam but also won the gold medal in the girls discus throw with a throw of 43.02m. Indu Bala (41.10m)  and Babli (39.58m) of Haryana secured second and third place respectively.

Sacramento (California), June 10, 2006: Vikas Gowda, a Frederick High School graduate and University of North Carolina senior, won the Gold Medal in discus throw in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) meet here on Friday (9 June).

Vikas was the second Indian to win the prestigious American Inter-Varsity title. Triple jumper Mohinder Singh Gill had won two titles back to back in 1970-71.

Vikas is the current Indian National record holder in Discus Throw with a distance of 64.69m.

Vikas got a silver medal last year in Sacramento with a throw of 60.07m. However he was lucky to grab to gold this time with his second throw which measured to 60.55m.
Pune, May 27,2006: Making most of the home conditions , Indian athletes went on winning as many as 6 gold medals , 7 Silvers and 5 Bronze in the 3rd and final leg of Asian Grand Prix series held at Sanas Ground-Pune on May 26.
Pinki Pramanik maintained her winning streak in women 400 & 800m with a personal best timings in 800m. Pinki became the highest prize winner athlete in the three leg Asian Grand Prix series with a total amount of US $8500.
Anju George faced another defeat from Olga Rypokova of Kazakhstan in the women Long jump where Anju failed to respond to Olga's 6.61m jump and could managed only 6.46m to win silver medal.
Mahan Singh won Gold in Long jump with 7.73m while Hari Shankar Roy soared to 2.18m to win high jump title. Sunil Kumar late burst to the finish line in the 3000 final helped to win gold. Anil Kumar established himself as a thrower of 75m range when he won his second title in the men's Javelin throw. Pune, May 25,2006: India’s first Sports city, Pune, is all set to exhibit Asia’s top athletes in the 3rd and final leg of the US $ 50,000 prize money “Asian Grand Prix 2006”, at the newly laid eight-lane synthetics track of Late Baburao Sanas Sports Complex on May 26, 2006 from 3pm onwards.
             Asian Grand Prix, that was initiated by Shri Suresh Kalmadi, in the year 2002, in its fourth year has grown to become the most privileged athletic series in Asia. This year Bangkok (18 May, 2006) and Bangalore (22 May, 2006) legs of Asian Grand Prix 2006 have been huge success with considerable improvement in the performance level through the series, has set the momentum for the Pune event which is expected to sizzle with even better performances from 140 top Asian Athletes from 20 various countries.

         High Jump arena will showcase an exciting contest in both men and women sections where Marina Aitoya of Kazakhstan is expected to push her personal best of 1.94m to new height. India’s Hari Shankar Roy is looking forward make most of the new runway to go beyond 2.25m.

Bangalore, May 22,2006: Indian athletes improved on their Bangkok medal tally to add more medals in the 2 nd leg of Asian Grand Prix held at Bangalore. India won 5 Gold, 7 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals.
           Pinki Pramanik pocketed $ 3000 for winning both 400m and 800m run with commanding lead over rivals. Trained by Nikoloi , Pinki had shown radical improvement in her performance over the period of just 10 months. Pinki won 400m with a personal best timing of 52.46s beating Manjit Kaur for the second time in succession.
            Earlier in the women's 800m final, Pinki easily broke from the group at 650m mark to lead the race till finish, clocking 2:04.42s to grab first place. S. Shanthi came closer to Pinki but had to settled on second place with 2: 04.95s. Amirova Zamira of Uzbekistan finished third with 2:05.87s
            Running in lane no. 8, Patlavath Shankar ran his best race in his athletic career spanning over decade clocking 50.39s in the men's 400m hurdles. Shankar failed to win the race and had to settle on third place in spite of exceptional performance. It was enough to establish the new Indian national record, erasing Sahib Singh's 8-year-old record of 50.43s.
             Hari Shankar Roy, slamming over the speculation about his potential after spending more than a year in treatment of back injury, won the men's High Jump, clearing the height of 2.21m. In 2004, Hari had sailed over 2.25m in the All Star Asian Meet at Singapore to put Indian high jumping record at par with the global level jumping performances.
             Asian Championship medalist Navpreet Singh improved on his poor show at Bangkok in the men's Shot Put, beating Chinese Zhang Qi with a massive throw of 19.84m. Navpreet is confident of crossing 20m barrier in the Pune Grand Prix later this week.
             Mahan Singh was unstoppable in the men's Long Jump again. Mahan won the gold with a jump of 7.69m. Will Mahan make three in a row by winning another Gold in the Pune Grand Prix? Talented Shiv Shankar Yadav grabbed bronze medal with a jump of 7.52m.
              India was not so lucky in women Long Jump event where Anju George failed to lived up to the expectations of the strong 2500 crowd cheering her on each jump with huge roar. Anju managed poor 6.35m lost to Olga Rypakova of Kazakistan who jumped to 6.39m today won the Gold.

Bangkok, May 18,2006: India win 3 gold. 5 silver and 4 bronze medals in the 1st Asian Grand Prix 2006 held at National Stadium, Bangkok.
             Pinki Pramanik blazed the track by winning silver in women 400m with 53.86 and later she improved herself to win gold in the women 800m run with a performance of 2:07.08s while Maha Singh maintained his gold winning performances at the Grand Prix circuit by winning gold in the men long jump with 7.55m.
               National Champion Anil Kumar of Haryana won his maidan title in the javelin Throw at the Asian level with a performance of 72.87m. In the absence of Seema Antil and Harwant Kaur , Krishna Poonia went down to Song aimin of china in the women discus throw . Poonia threw 54.32 while amin managed 56.99m
            Navpreet singh won the silver in the men's shot with a throw of 18.61m before losing out with Zhang ki of china who heaved 7.26kg shot put to 19.00m.
            Making most of the absence of Ghamanda ram, India's Francis sagayaraj grabbed his maidan medal in the Asian grand prix in the 800m run with a timing of 1:53.75s.
Sunil Kumar left Pritam bind to third place in the men's 3000m to claim silver medal with a timing of 8:26.75s.
