been re-instated to compete in the National and International
competitions after completing the reinstatement testing as stipulated in
IAAF rule 40.12.
She was banned during the years 2005 for anti-doping rule violation
during the World Championship in Helsinki.

senior athletes for the forthcoming busy 2008 season training camp.
2008 is the Olympic year for senior athletes and top athletes will
attend training camp in Muscat in Jan 2008 and will take part in Asian
Indoor Athletics Championship in Feb 2008 at Doha.
For Junior athletes it very important year as India will host
Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune. Junior Chief coach Suresh Babu has
selected athletes from various championships held in 2007 for advanced
training camp. India will also take part in Asian Junior Athletics

2 Dec : India’s Ram Singh Yadav finished on the 7th position in the GROE
Nation Challenge category in the Standard Chartered Singapore
International Marathon held at Singapore. Running his maiden marathon on
foreign soil, Ram Singh clocked 2:29:30s to finish on the 23rd position
overall in the marathon.
Indian Men team now leads South Asia and Middle East region with a total
cumulative timing of 4:58:24hr after 2 races out of 4 in the Standard
Chartered Greasiest Race on Earth challenge 2007/08.
In the overall standing India has slipped down one position to sixth
among 33 National teams.
In the Women’s section Mumbai’s Leelamma Alphanso clcokec 3:16:14hr to
finish first in the South Asia and Middle East category but Indian still
need to improve on cumulative time to beat Sri Lankan team.

Indian athletes leave for South Asian Jr Athletics

A 58-member Indian Junior Athletics Team (31 men and 27 women) will take
part in the first South Asian Junior Athletics Championships starting in
Colombo tomorrow. The team has already left Chennai for Colombo last
night for the two-day meet after the National Junior Athletics
Championships held in Vijayawada from November 24-27, an Athletics
Federation of India release said.

Vijayawada,
Nov. 27: Kerala won the overall championship in the 23rd National Junior
Athletic Championship held at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation
Stadium in the city between November 24 and 27. Kerala athletes
dominated in all categories and 77 medals which included 37 gold, 26
silver and 14 bronze. Tamil Nadu athletes stood second with 52 medals
while Haryana
and
Andhra Pradesh third and fourth positions with 37 and 26 medals
respectively. Tamil Nadu athletes won 13 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze
medals, Haryana 8 gold, 15 silver and 14 bronze medals and the host 7
gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze medals. Nine new national records were
created in the athletic meet.

Sajitha (400 mts hurdles), Tintiluka (800 mts), Shejil Verghese (400 mts
hurdles) and Akhil Krishnan (110 mts) from Kerala, Man Preet Kaur from
Punjab (shot put) and Sudheer Kumar from Haryana (long jump) have
created new national records.
Krishna
Kumar Patel from Uttar Pradesh (Javelin throw), Arjun Kumar from Delhi
(Discus throw) and Advesh Kumar from Gujarat (steeplechase) have also
set the new records. Vignesh Pandit from Tamil
Nadu, Sindhia Moll and Tintuluka from Kerala and MR Povamma from
Karnataka won individual championships in under 14, under 16, under 20
and under 18 categories in girls. In boys section,
Kalyan Sikinder (West Bengal), Arun Kumar (Kerala), Jitin Paul (Kerala)
and Md Ibrar from Manipur bagged individual championships in under 14,
16, 18 and 20 categories respectively. Tintuluka and Ibrar were adjudged
best athletes. Minister for Municipal Administration Koneru Ranga Rao
distributed the prizes. District Collector Navin Mittal, Mayor Mallika
Begum also attended the function. |

The Kerala athletes continued their domination on day two by erasing
three meet records in the Reliance 23rd junior National athletic
championship at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium here on Sunday.
Kerala u-18 hurdler K.V. Sajitha bettered G. Jena’s (Orissa) timing by
clocking 1:04.24 seconds in the 400 metres, while Tintu Luka eclipsed
West Bengal’s Jhuma Khatun record by clocking 2:09.92 seconds in the 800
metres event in the u-20 segment. Shejil Verghese added more lustre with
his 52.51 seconds timing in the 400m hurdles event thus bettering P.
Shankar’s (52.75s) endeavour at Shimoga in 2003.

Pulimoottil J. Vinod emerged winner in Asian Indoor Games
Macau, Nov 1:
Perseverance has finally paid off to India’s finest decathlete P. J.
Vinod in terms of winning his first continental level title in combined
event. Vinod won the gold medal for India in Men’s Heptathlon event by
scoring 5561 points in two day long gruelling Heptathlon event on the
last day of athletic competition of 2nd Asian Indoor Games at
Macau today.
28 years old Vinod beat Kazakistan’
Dubitskiy Pavel
(5432 points) by more than hundred points after completion of 1000m run,
7th event of Heptathlon.
Vinod Performance: (60m: 7.02s, Long Jump: 7.18m, Shot Put:
13.86m, High Jump: 1.91m, 60m hurdles: 8.15s, Pole Vault: 4.50m, 1000m:
2:58.17s)
Following on the footsteps of legendary
decathlete Suresh Babu,
Vinod who hails from Kerala has spared no efforts to achieve greater
skills in each decathlon event. In due course he faced various injuries
due to which he had to exit from many contests.
In 2007, Vinod’s season opener Federation Cup demonstrated his level of
fitness and confidence when he scored 7004 points followed by brave
efforts at Pune National combined event, battling with heavy rain he
managed to score convincing score of 6893.
Vinod was in good form during
Asian Championship at Amman but he could not win the medal inspite of
scoring 2nd overall best performance by an Indian with 7441
points.
In other events Indian athletes won 3 silver and 4 bronze medals on the
last day of the athletic competitions.
Chinese Liu Qing
shattered Sinimol Paulose’s double gold medal winning mission by beating
her in the final of 800m event. Liu clocked 2:06.13s while Silver medal
winner Sinimol finished with 2:06.32s. A. Vijila took bronze with
2:06.75s.
In the
women’s 3000m final, Preeja Sreedharan won the silver medal with a
timing of 9:27.62s while Surendra Singh too claimed Silver in the men’s
3000m final with a timing of 8:04.99s. Sunil Kumar took bronze with
8:10.07s. R. Rajeev won bronze medal in the men’s 800m with timing of
1:50.87s.
Indian women 4x400m relay team consisting of Anu Mariam Jose, Antony
Vijila, Sini jose and Machettira Poovamma Raju won bronze medal with a
timing of 3:41.09s.

Hamza set Games Record in 1500m at Asian Indoor Games
New Delhi,
Oct 31:India’s Sinimol Paulose maintained her unbeaten run in 1500m at
the Asian level in 2007 by winning Asian Indoor Games title with a
timing of 4:22.56s. In 2007, Sinimol had won hatrick at Asian Grand Prix
series followed by Asian Championship title at Amman. Sinimol beat
Svetlana Lukasheva of Kazakhstan and Chinese Li Zhenzhu in the final.
Sinimol had won bronze in the
inaugural edition of Asian Indoor Games in 2005 at Pattaya.
In the men’s 1500m final,
Chatholi Hamza of India emerged winner in the close finish upsetting
defending champion Kamal Ali of Qatar. Hamza’s 5th gear run
in the last 50m helped him to win his first major title at the Asian
level with a new games record of 3:50.22s.
In the men’s 400m semi-final
India’s both runners Bibin Mathew and Vinay Chaudhary failed to make it
to the final, they finished 4th in their respective semi
finals.

the best among Indian finishers and bettered his last year's timing to
finish 16th overall in the Vodafone Delhi Half Marathon held today in
Delhi.
Yadav clocked 66.09, bettering
his own mark of 66.52 by 43 seconds and finishing second among the
Indians and 17th overall was Deep Chand in 66.10, just a second behind
Yadav. Kumar Mukesh finished in 66.12 and 18th overall, a creditable
performance from the trio, bettering last year's showing.

the best men and women team championship. This demonstrate domination of

Arunjith S. of Indian Railways won
the men's 200m with a new championship record timing of 20.92s while
Preeja Sreedharan demolished Sunita Rani's 8 year old championship
record in 5000m with a timing of 15:45.96s.
Start jumper Renjith Maheshwary faced his second
defeat of the season by Amarjeet Singh who set new championship record
distance of 16.54m in the men's triple jump final.
Sahana Kumari jumped to the height of 1.82m to break Bobby Aloysius
9year old record by 1cm in the final of the Women's High Jump. In the
end Indian railways women 4x100m relay team set the new meet record with

Jamshedpur,
Oct 24: Babu Bhai of Services rewrote his own national record in men's
20000m walk with a timing of 1 hr 23min 40sec. on the second day of the
47th National Open Athletics Championship. Within a span of over one
month, Babu Bhai improved the National record twice. He also became the
first Indian to break 1hr 25min barrier in 20000m walk. His teammate
P.S. Jalan finished well behind to him with a timing of 1hr 26min 55sec.
Veteran sprinter Poonam Tomar faced the defeat by N. Sharada in women's
100m final. Sharda clocked 11.83s while Poonam finished the short race
in 12.03s.
In the men's 100m dash, Sameer Mon of Services clinch the title with
10.53s. Sameer could not perform well in the recent World military games
but his title run at Open National brought him some consolation.

Oct 23: Finally it took three long years for Benedict Starly to stop
Hari Shankar Roy's unbeaten run in the Men's High Jump event in the
domestic season. Benedict did it in style clearing a height of 2.19m to
clinch gold
medal and creation of new meet record in the men's High Jump final on
the opening day of the 47th National Open Athletics Championship here.
Roy managed to jump 2.15m for silver medal while Vinod Kumar grabbed
bronze with 2.03m.
Early in the morning session
Preeja Sreedharan of Indian railways returned to her Gold medal winning
runs by beating Kavita Raut of Maharashtra who had beaten Preeja in the
All India Railways few days ago in the Women's 10000m run. Preeja amend
her own championship record to the new timing of 33:25.0s but fell short
of National mark. Kavita Raut too bettered the meet record with a new
perosnal best of 34:00.5s. |

More than 700 athletes from North Zone took part in the 19th North Zone
Junior Athletic championship which concluded here at the Punjab
University ground in Chandigarh.
Two National marks were set during the three day event. Ankita Julka od
Delhi set new record in Discus while Akash Antil of Haryana too set
record in Discus for under 18 category.

Athletics Championship 2007 which concluded today at the Tatya Tope
stadium at Bhopal.
Series of upsets
continued on the last day where Preeja Sreedharan got beaten by Kavita
Raut of Maharashtra who also set New Championship record in 10000m final
with 34:23:80s. In the men's 10000m Surender Singh set second another
championship record with a timing of 29:06.17s eclipsing Madan Singh 14
year old record.

Bhopal, 17 Sep: Surendra Singh of Uttarakhand amended his
own championship record ( 13:59.46s set in 2006) in the Men's 5000m with
a timing of 13:55.71s in the first event of the 47th National Interstate
Senior Athletics Championship. Kashinath Aswale of Jharkhand finished
second with 14:05.76s while arch rival of Surender, Sunil Kumar slipped
to third place with a performance of 14:14.34s.

In the Women's 5000m final, O.P. Jaisha of
Kerala made a suburb comeback after Doha Asian Games and won the title
with 16:21.06s beating favorite Preeja Sreedharan (16:25.31s) of
Jharkhand. Kavita Raut of Maharashtra finished on the third place with a
timing of 16:27.77s.
Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh will
officially inaugurate the championship at 3:30pm today. |

M Binu awarded with Arjuna Award.
Delhi: Indian record holder in 400m, K. Matthews Binu today received
India's highest sporting award, Arjuna award by the hands of President
of India Mrs. Pratibha Patil. This is the second Arjuna Award for the
Binu's family as his sister K. M.. Beenamol had received this award in
2000. Athletics Federation of India congratulate Binu for this honour.

Anju
finished 9th in Long Jump at World Championship
Delhi: India’s
lone athlete who had reached in the final of the World Championship for
the third time could not find place among medal winners. Anju George
could not take off far in first jump which measured modest 6.10m and she
fouled next jump before recovering in the third jump with a distance of
6.53m. But it was not enough to find place in top 8. In the end Anju
finished 9th with 6.53m. |

heroic performance and true to her stature Anju George smoothly moved
into the finals of the women's Long Jump event in the World Championship
in Athletics at Osaka.
Anju cleared 6.60m in the qualifying round held today morning. Anju had
won bronze medal in the 2003 World Championship.
Krishna Poonia could not qualified in the women's discus throw as she
could manage on 57.17m in the qualifying round held in the morning

Aug 26: Joseph Abraham set a new Indian record
but failed to advance to the final of the men's 400m hurdles at the
World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan, today.
Abraham clocked 49.51 seconds, in the one lap race, improving upon his
own national record by 0.01 seconds, but finished seventh out of eight
runners in Heat 1.
The two top finishers from each of the three heats plus the fastest two
among the rest made it to the finals on Thursday. Abraham finished 18th
overall among 24 athletes in the semifinals. |

of the men's Discus Throw in the World Championship in Athletics at
Osaka. Vikas could managed only 61.22m in the qualifying round held
today morning. He finished 17th among 29 World's best Discus throwers.

Delhi, August 25: Joseph Abraham kept India's hope alive by moving into
second of the 400m Hurdles with a timing of 49.64s on the opening day of
the IAAF World Championship in Athletics as Osaka.
In the morning session Navpreet Singh started the campaign in the men's
shot put qualifying round with a 19.00m throw but in the later throws he
could managed only to 19.35m but it was not enough to qualify for
Final.
In the evening session India's best bet Renjith Maheshwary could not
produce big distance in the Men's Triple Jump qualifying round. He
jumped to 16.38m.
In men's 400m hurdles Joseph Abraham was running in heat 5 which emerged
the fastest heat and this made him to put all out run . Joseph moved
into semis as a best losers. |

Finished Third in Bayer-Meeting 2007 in Germany
New Delhi,
Aug 10,2007: India’s Anju George finished 3rd in the women
Long Jump event of the Bayer-Meeting 2007 in Leverkusen (Germany). Anju
cleared 6.51m, well below here season best of 6.65m. Gomes Naide of
Portugal won the first place with 6.83m while Bianca Kappler of German
finished second with 6.73m.
Now it’s
an uphill task for Anju to reach finals in the World Championship in
Osaka later this month. Anju had won Bronze medal in the Paris World
Championship in 2003 with 6.70m jump. |

Indian Youth Relay team
finished credible 5th in World Youth- Final day
New Delhi,
15 July: Indian Medley Relay team finished fifth in the final of the
Girls Medley relay final at the IAAF World Youth Athletics
Championship concluded today at the Ostrava (Czech) .
Indian
team comprising of Nanda Sarbani ( Orissa), Shriya Vidwans
( Maharashtra), Anu Mariam Jose (Kerala) and M R. Poovamma (Kranataka)
improved on their heats timings to register best timing of 2:10.18s
to finish 5th . Title went to USA Youth who logged World
Youth Leading timing of 2:05.74s. Jamica team finished on second
spot with 2:06.77s while Candian youth team bagged third place
clocking 2:09.08s.
Indian athletes, especially Girls put up their best performance ever
in the World Youth where M. R. Poovamma finished 7th in
400m, Manpreet Kaur 9th in Shot Put and finally Medley
relay team finished credible 5th in the final. Click here

Indian Youth Relay team reach
Final of World Youth
New Delhi, 14 July: Indian
Youth medley relay team consisting of Nanda Srabani, Shriya Vidwans,
Anu Mariam Jose and M. R. Poovamma made it to the Final of the IAAF
World Youth Athletics Championship.
Indian Youth team clocked 2:10.53s to finish second to Canadian team
in the third heat of Girls Medley Relay. Medley relay consist of
100m, 200m, 300m and 400m. Nanda Srabani started the race and handed
over baton to Shriya Vidwans at 100m mark and Shriya put forth all
her speed and pass the baton to Anu Mariam Jose and finally Anu gave
it to Poovamma to finish the final leg of relay. Poovamma ran superb
400m to edge out Latoya, Barbados team member at the finish line. It
was 4th consecutive 400m run of Poovamma in the
Championship. Earlier, Manpreet Kaur finished 9th in the
Final of Girls Shot put with a throw of 13.57m. |

Poovamma finish seventh in Final of World Youth
New Delhi, 13 July: India’s M. R. Poovamma finished 7th in the final
of the Girls 400m run in the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championship
at Ostrava (Czech Republic) .
M.R.
Poovamma, a student of St. Mary's PU College in Mangalore started
the race in lane 8, with one option and that was to run fast and she
did it but in the last 100m pre race favourite Yuliya BARALEY of
Ukraine took the charge of the race and won the title with 53.57s.
Poovamma clocked 55.49s. |

Manpreet Kaur qualify for Shot Put in World Youth
New Delhi,
13 July: Inspired by Poovamma’s performance in 400m, Manpreet Kaur
of India heaved 4kg. Shot put to 13.56m to became the first Indian
girl athlete in Field event to qualify for the Final of the IAAF
World Youth Athletics Championship currently progressing at Ostrava
in Czech Republic.
Manpreet, World youth top 10 of 2007 tossed first throw to 12.96m,
below her regular opening series but in the second attempt Manpreet
threw 13.56m, sufficient to make it to the final. |

Poovamma,
first Indian youth athlete to enter final of World Youth
New Delhi, 12 July: M. R. Poovamma became the first Indian athlete
to enter in the final of IAAF World Youth Athletics Championship.
Running in lane 2, Poovamma clocked personal best timing of 55.15s.
to finish third in the 2nd semi final of girls 400m run .
Yuliya BARALEY of Ukraine won the semis with 54.96s while Canadian
Natalie GEIGER took second place with 55.00s. |

Poovamma
moves into semis- day one of World Youth Athletics
New Delhi, 11 July- India’s M. R. Poovamma moves into the semi-final
of Girls 400m run when she finished third in the 6th heat
with a timing of 55.37s, just outside her personal best on the first
day of the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championship at Ostrava.
Poovamma will run tomorrow in the semi finals.
In the morning session, Ajay Pal Singh failed to find place in the
Top 12 of Boys Shot Put. Ajay threw 16.83m and finished on the 18th
place in Group-A. In the later evening Sahil Mahindra will try to
qualify in the boys 800m final |

18 Indian athletes in IAAF World Ranking
New Delhi: India's new sensation Renjith Maheshwary has become the
highest rank Indian athlete in the latest IAAF World Rankings.
Renjith is on 24th rank in Triple Jump with a total points of 1183.
This is first time when four Indian triple Jumpers have found place
in IAAF World ranking. Bibu Mathew ( 52), Amarjeet Singh (63), Alex
Thomas ( 69) are the other triple jumpers on the list.
In the women section Asian Grand Prix 2007, triple gold medalist
Sinimol Paulose and Asian Games medalist Krishna Poonia are on 28th
rank in 1500m and Discus Throw respectively.

14 athletes to represent India in World Youth
Delhi, 5 July: India will field 14 member athletic team in the 5th
IAAF World Youth Athletics Championship to be held at Ostrava
(Czech) from July 11-15,2007.
Indian team is selected on the basis of performance of National
Youth Athletics Championship held in Bangalore on June 1-2.
Following are the athletes. Team consists of 6 boys and 8 girls.

Pune, 29 June: Delhi's Jora Singh won the title of
the "India's Fittest a thlete"
when he won the Men's Decathlon with a score of 7001 points.
Although Jora is short of 500 points to his best but considering the
weather condition in Pune for past days his performance is
noteworthy. His arch rival P. J. Vinod finished second with 6893
points while Ram Niwas took third place scoring 6613 points.
In the women section favorite Susmita Singha Roy of West
Bengal took title with 5137 points. Kerala's upcoming M. P. Sinimol
took silver medal with 4851 points while D. Karpuraamala of
Tamilnadu won bronze with 4088 points.
Anju George of Tamilnadu failed to achieve World Championship
qualifying distance in spite of winning the event. Anju logged 6.42m
in her third attempt. M.A. Prajusha of Kerala took second place with
6.05m.
Anatana Khatun of West Bengal took top slot in Girls
under 18 years Heptathlon with 4285 points. |

Renjith
breaks 36 years old record in Triple Jump, joins Elite group of
World Class jumpers.
New Delhi, 25
June 2007: Renjith Maheshwary erased the oldest standing Indian
record in triple jump with a jump of 17.04m at Guwahati during the
Asian Grand Prix series where he earned gold medal. Previous record
was held by Commonwealth Games medallist Mohinder Singh Gill since
1971. Joseph Abraham amended his own record in 400m hurdles with a
performance of 49.52s, becoming the first Indian to run below 50s
barrier. He finished second in 400m Hurdles.

17 Indian
athletes selected to represent Asia in 2nd Afro-Asian
Games
New Delhi, 15 June 2007: Indian Olympic Association has selected 17
Indian athletes to represent Asia in the 2nd Afro-Asian
Games at Algiers in Algeria. Games will be held from 28th
July to 6th August 2007.
According to Olympic
Council of Asia, Doha Asian Games 2006 was basis for selection of
Asia Team. OCA has selected first four in a given discipline based
on the final results of the Doha AG.
Following are the selected athletes:

Airports Authority of India is inviting applications from
outstanding young athletes for AAI Talent Search scheme.
AAI will give Rs. 5 lacs as a financial assistance in one year to
selected athlete. Athlete must be under 21 years to qualify for this
scheme.

Singh of UP set new record in Discus while Devender Singh of
Gujrat equals Pole Vault record
Bangalore,
2 June 2007: Shivam Singh of UP set the new meet record in the Boys
discus throw with a throw of 53.29m while Devender Singh of Gujrat
earned first major medal for Gujrat team by winning pole vault while
equalling the meet record of 4.10m. on the concluding day of the 4th
UNITECH National Youth Athletics Championship at Kanteerava Stadium.
Tamilnadu won Girls championship
while Kerala took Boys. Karnataka's M.R .Poovamma and Delhi's Ajay
Singh were adjudged the best athletes. |

Manpreet Kaur heave 4kg iron ball to record distance
Bangalore,
1 June 2007: Manpreet Kaur of Punjab created the New National Record
in the Girls under 18 years Shot Put with a massive throw of 14.35m
erasing Stefi Cardozo’s record of 13.23m set in 2006. Saranya J of
Kerala (11.26m) and Pinki Dey of West Bengal (11.01m) finished on
second and third place respectively. Both were way behind to
Manpreet’s record breaking distance. Manpreet had recently won the
senior title in the Federation Cup at Kolkata with 14.42m. If
Manpreet remain consistent with her performance then she could
figure in top 5 in the forthcoming World Youth Championship.
Interestingly total of 18 athlete’s performances were better than
the IAAF Entry standard for World Youth after completion of day one
events. Most prominent performance came from Track where Asian
Junior Finalist M. R. Poovamma of host Karnataka secured first place
in Girls one lap race with a record timing of 54.7s( hand-time).
Debashree Majumdar of West Bengal claimed second spot with 56.7s
while Jauna Murmu of Orissa grabbed third place. Poovamma is India’s
best bet in the next year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune.
Viredner Kumar of Haryana set the new meet record in the Boys
Javelin Throw with a throw of 65.00m. |

than 350 Youth athletes from 19 States had confirmed their
participation in the 4th National Youth Athletics
Championship scheduled to commence from 1st June at
Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore. This championship is basis for
selection of Indian Youth Team for the 5th IAAF World
Youth Athletics Championship to be held at Ostrava (Czech Republic)
from 11th to 15 July 2007. |

Vikas
moves in World top 10 of 2007 in Discus Throw with New Indian Record
Salinas, CA (USA), May 18: Vikas Gowda, Asian Championship silver
medalist and current Indian record holder in Discus throw altered
the Indian record for the third time with a gigantic throw of
64.96m.
He finished 4th in the Gary Shaw Classic Throws meet held in the
campus of Hartnell’s college in Salinas. Jarred Rome of USA won with
a distance of 67.76m beating Niklas Arrhenius of Swedon (65.77m) and
Adam Kuehl (64.98m) of USA. Vikas lost podium for just 2cm.
In 1979, Shaw , coach of Hartnell’s college started an annual
"Throwers Only" meet which draws great attention from discus
throwers all over the world because of the ideal throwing conditions
that includes the wonderful breeze that sweeps across Salinas nearly
everyday just after noon.
This is the same place and event when
Vikas set the National record of 64.35m in 2004 further he improved
in 2005 at Charlotte Invitation with 64.69m. It all seems Vikas has
put back his disappointing 2006 season and now emerging strong in
2007 has set eye on Osaka World Championship.
Vikas, 6ft 9 inch tall, weighs more than 110kg is the most promising
Indian athlete to win Global honours for India. He has indicated his
arrival in 2002 when he represented Indian in World Junior where he
finished 8th in Shot Put and 12th in Discus.
Vikas, 24yrs old graduated in Maths from Carolina University during
which he earned All-America honors in the discus with a runner-up
performance at the NCAA Championships and rare win in NCAA in Discus
Throw by Indian.

Kaur score first major victory, Junior dominates Indian GP
Patiala, May 3,2007: Mandeep
Kaur of ONGC won her first major victory in the Seniors when she
defeated Manjit Kaur and Chitra Soman in the 400m at the Indian
Grand Prix 2007 at Patiala yesterday. Mandeep clocked personal best
timing of 53.34s. In the men's section Joseph Abraham of CRPF won
400m with 47.20s, improving on his last year's timing of 47.54s on
Patiala Track.

Rejith Maheswary
went over 16m barrier in the Men's triple jump for the 11th time and
twice in 2007. He logged 16.33m to register season leading mark.
Renjith (PB: 16.54m) is
aiming to break longest standing Indian Record of 16.79m this
season. Alex Thomas took second place with 16.03m.
Bhartender Singh emerge winner in hotly contested men's Long Jump
with a personal best of 7.54m to beat Shamsher Pratap Singh who too
jumped to 7.54m, his personal best. Bhartender had represented India
in the World Youth Athletics Championship in Marrakech in 2005.

stars for Indian GP in Athletics at Patiala
New Delhi, May 2,2007: Fresh from training camp in South Africa,
rejuvenated Indian Elite Athletes will display their performance in
the season-opener India Grand Prix (Indian GP) at NS NIS Patiala
today. In the view of forthcoming Asian and World
Athletics Championship, Indian GP-I will be an opportunity for
athletes to meet the Qualifying marks.
On site and off site
rivalry between Seema Antil and Krishna Poonia will make Women
Discus Throw event interesting. Krishna has won Bronze medal in the
Doha Asian Games with personal best of 61.53m while National record
holder Seema was able to cross 60m barrier only once in 2006 when
she won silver in Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Recovered from back
injury Harwant Kaur will add more spice to the women’s Discus
Throw.
In the men’s 400m, National Record holder K. M. Binu has shown
drastic improvement during the training session in last few days,
this will make Bhupinder Singh more difficult task to maintain his
wins in one day runs.
Asian Champion Manjit Kaur who failed to dip below 52sec in 2006 ,
is now ready to blaze the tracks with excellent timings. She too has
reported impressive timings during training sessions in South
Africa. Chitra Soman will be the only other runners to challenge
Manjit.

winners of many International events will tie knot with Samir Bera
at Kolkata on May 6,2007. Soma, 29 had won Silver medal in the Asian
Games 2002 and 2006 in the most grueling event of Women athletics i.
e Heptathlon. She represented India in Sydney 2000 and Athens
2004 Olympics. Government of India had awarded her prestigious
Arjuna Award for her excellent contribution in Athletics.
Soma has decided quit sports after marriage. Indian athletics
congratulates couple and wishes them a very happy married life.

selected 71Athletes (41 Boys and 30 Girls) for the camp in
preparation to the World Youth Athletics Championship to be
held in July 2007. Selection of athletes were done on the
basis of the performance achieved in 2006 . Athletes who
have either attained or close to the Entry Standard set by
IAAF have been short listed for the camp. Indian Junior
Chief Coach Suresh Babu said "Indian team will be finalized
during the National Youth Athletics Championship at
Bangalore on June 2,2007. Camp will be held at JRD TATA
sports complex in Jamshedpur and LNCPE Trivendrum. We have
13 coaches to train these athletes"

DELHI: Monika Raut won India's first ever individual gold
medal in the Asian cross-country championships when she
claimed the junior women's 6km title in the ninth edition of
the Asian Cross Country Championship held at Amman, Jordan,
on Saturday, March 10.

Monika and sister Rohini made
it a gold-silver sweep in the junior women's event that
helped India win the team championship also. Saloni
Chowdhary and Swati Gadhave were the other members of the
team. India had won the men's team title in 1993.
India's Surinder Singh claimed the silver in the men's 12km
event, clocking 43:36, behind Qatar's Ahmad Hassan. |
